Pavers and how/why they started

The UK company was founded in York in 1971 by Catherine Paver who was frustrated by not being able to find shoes for her sensitive feet that are stylish and look good. Catherine took out a £200 loan from the bank for a ‘sofa’ and used that money to kickstart her entrepreneurial venture into a company which provides a fantastic range of products with comfort in mind.

The initial phase of the brand saw Catherine selling shoes and clothes at homeware parties held in houses and village halls. Despite starting small, the demand for her comfortable and stylish footwear grew steadily. In 1981, the company took a significant step forward by opening its first store in the charming seaside town of Scarborough. The store focused on offering quality brands at discounted prices, quickly gaining popularity.

The success in Scarborough prompted the expansion of Pavers with subsequent stores opening in key locations such as York, Hull, and Newcastle by the early 1980s. The positive response from customers encouraged Catherine to continue her pursuit of providing affordable, yet high-quality footwear.

By 1996, the company had grown significantly, leading to the establishment of a dedicated head office in York. Alongside the office, a sprawling 90,000 square feet distribution centre was set up to streamline operations and meet the increasing demand for their products.

As the years progressed, Pavers continued its expansion, opening more and larger stores to cater to a wider audience. The company’s commitment to offering quality brands at discounted prices remained steadfast. Pavers’ success story is not only reflected in its extensive retail network but also in the accolades it has received over the years.

In 2020, the team achieved a significant milestone by being voted the best retailer to work for in the UK by Retail Week. The recognition was based on reviews posted on Glassdoor, where Pavers scored an impressive 4.6 out of 5. This acknowledgment is a testament to the company’s dedication to creating a positive and rewarding work environment.

Pavers has successfully adapted to the digital age, with a user-friendly website that caters to online shoppers. The website features a sales page, offering discounts for those seeking affordable yet stylish footwear. Additionally, Pavers has partnered with Evri for product delivery and has a presence on well-known platforms like Next and Amazon, expanding its reach to a broader audience.

As Pavers continues to evolve and thrive, it remains true to its founding principles of providing comfortable, stylish, and affordable footwear for all. Catherine Paver’s initial vision has blossomed into a successful and well-respected brand that has left an indelible mark on the world of footwear retail.
